This is a topic that comes up in the salon often. "My hair is thinning and I don't know why."
"My hair just gets thinner and thinner every year."
Does this sound familiar at all? I think it is safe to say that we all suffer with this to a certain degree.
There are many factors that can cause hair loss and thinning such as change in medications, change in diet, trauma caused to the body from injury or sickness, stress, hormone changes, thyroid imbalance, etc.
Here are a few tips and tricks I have learned recently to help reverse thinning.
1. First let's discuss topical solutions. This would be any type of Shampoo, Conditioner, Creams, or Lotions that go on the skin.
Every thing that I have learned about hairloss and thinning point to inside the body vs outside. I have learned that if the follicle dies there is no amount of topical treatment that will repair the follicle simply because it must be done from inside the body.
Some guest have seen results from shampoos and conditioner I however do not believe that they are super helpful.
2. This brings us to oral solutions.
Biotin is often considered a good source of vitamins to regrow hair. In my observation over the years most women that use Biotin actually experience more growth from the hair they already have vs. replacing the hair that is thinning.
Low iron can affect the hair as well. I learned recently that a normal Iron Ferritin is from 12-300. Research shows that your Ferritin needs to be at least 70 for hair growth. A few things you can eat to boost your Ferritin numbers are lentils and beans, oysters and salmon, spinach and dark greens, lean beef and chicken, raisin and dried fruits, tofu, nuts and seeds, and eggs.
My personal favorite solution is a product called Viviscal. Viviscal is a vitamin that you take daily and it has come to my attention that there is different formulas. I recommend Viviscal Professional. I do not have experience with the other formulas. With use of the professional formula we saw new growth with in 1-2 months of taking the supplements.
I always recommend changing diet to start out with but Viviscal is a fast alternative if you don't want to change your eating habits.
